Educational providers of post-16 learning and skills have responsibilities to ensure the safety of children, young people and those adults deemed vulnerable and to deal with all aspects of creating a safer learning environment by having fully inclusive and integrated safer practices that apply to all staff and learners. All providers’ staff will be expected to attend training on Safeguarding organised by the Learning Trust.
Definition of Vulnerable Adults
Person aged 18 or over and:
- In need of support because of a physical, sensory or learning disability, mental health issue, age, substance mis-use or an illness
- Requiring assistance in the conduct of his/her affairs
- Receiving a social care service or direct payment
- Receiving a health service
- Living in sheltered housing or homeless
- Detained in custody or under a probation order
- Is in an abusive relationship
- Is at risk of hurting themselves or others
Definition of Abuse
- Physical
- Sexual
- Psychological/emotional
- Financial or material
- Wilful neglect and acts of omission
- Discrimination
However, any adult could potentially be the victim of abuse. (SVG Act, 2006)
What to look out for
- multiple bruising or finger marks
- injuries the person cannot give a good reason for
- deterioration of health for no apparent reason
- sudden weight loss/gain
- withdrawal or mood changes
- inappropriate or inadequate clothing
- an individual who is unwilling to be alone with a particular carer
- unexplained shortage of money
What you should do
- Do act if you suspect a vulnerable person is being abused
- Do talk to the person listen carefully-give them your full attention but let them know you have to report this & write short notes of details as soon as possible afterwards
