Family Learning is about creating opportunities for families to be creative, have fun and learn
together. It can connect generations, strengthen communities and ignite the potential of children and families.
Family Learning is an empowering process: parents/carers gain an insight of how their children learn and how they can help their own children. Parents/Carers and children spend quality time together and it enables parents/carers to access other adult learning opportunities.
In Hackney, Family Learning takes place in over 20 different schools and community venues across the borough with a wide range of classes and activities available including Family Literacy and Numeracy workshops, Helping your child with Reading and Writing, Family Canoeing and Narrowboating, Learning through play and Family Filming.
Other successes reported by those who run Family Learning programmes:
- Family Learning enables parents/carers and children to have fun together
- Confidence and raised self esteem amongst parents/carers and children
- Children demonstrating increased commitment to other aspects of the school curriculum
- Increased parental awareness of the way schools operate and the opportunities for their involvement
