Adult Learning
Introduction

Family Learning is about creating opportunities for families to be creative, have fun and learn together. It can connect generations, strengthen communities and ignite the potential of children and families.

Family Learning is an empowering process: parents/carers spend quality time with their children and gain a valuable insight into how their children learn and how they can support their learning at home. Family Learning is closely linked to further adult learning available in Hackney and parent/carers will have the opportunities to meet with information, advice and guidance workers to discuss further learning opportunities.

  • Family Learning enables parents/carers and children to learn while having fun together
  • Family Learning raises confidence and self esteem amongst parents/carers and children
  • Family Learning increases parental awareness of the way schools operate and the opportunities for their involvement
  • Children taking part in Family Learning courses show increased commitment to school work

In 2010/11, Family Learning commissioned or directly delivered courses in over 20 schools, childrenā??s centres and community organisations across Hackney. These ranged from initial engagement programmes such as Help Your Child Develop and Family Arts and Crafts to accredited programmes such as Family Literacy, Family Numeracy and Financial Capability.

In 2011/12 we plan to build on the success of enrichment programmes themed on ECM agenda such as sustainability, staying healthy and financial management in key areas of deprivation within Hackney. The 0-19 age group and their parents/carers will be supported through community organisations and childrenā??s centres with emphasis on the Early Years and Foundation stage.
