Hackney’s looked after children enjoyed the limelight as their achievements and successes over the last year were celebrated at a unique awards ceremony held at the Hackney Empire on 3rd November 2009.
Many of Hackney’s looked after children were nominated for awards by their social workers, foster carers, residential units and schools. Awards were presented for excellence in education, progress, outstanding achievements, dedication, hard work and positive contribution as well as a special all-rounder outstanding achiever award.
The awards ceremony recognised children across the various social work units. In addition to the presentation of awards there was artistic performances, guest speakers and a celebration tea.
All research indicates that looked after children have lower academic achievement levels than their peers. The government recognises that there is an urgent need to narrow this gap and improve educational outcomes for this group of young people to ensure that they get the same chances to be as successful as everybody else. The Learning Trust and Hackney, as corporate parents, is leading the way in supporting this vulnerable group of children and empowering them to build on their successes.
