Many local schools have been celebrating recently because they have achieved National Healthy School Status. In December 2006 only 15% of schools in the borough had achieved Healthy School Status and now, just 18 months later, it is 60% - a huge leap for Hackney and its schools.
This means The Learning Trust and the Hackney Healthy Schools Programme have met Local Area Agreement "stretch targets" and are online to achieve national targets for December 2008. But, of more importance, are the benefits to local schools and their communities - healthier, happier children, greater involvement with parents and local agencies, and an improvement in achievement.
The Hackney Healthy Schools Team and HAPPY in Hackney have produced 2 booklets for parents providing tips and advice for encouraging children to keep active, eat healthy and develop their well-being.
Primary schools and early years settings have each been sent sample copies of the booklet, entitled "Top Tips for Health". Additional copies of the booklet can be purchased - details of how to order have been sent to each Hackney setting with the samples.
Generic versions without The Learning Trust and local partnership logos can be ordered for external boroughs and agencies.
