Schools at the Heart – The Olympics and Hackney Schools

Hackney schools at the Heart Project was set up to maximise the potential of the 2012 Games in the school curriculum. It ensures Hackney children and young people have the opportunity to get involved in the 2012 Games by:

  • Inspiring participation in sports and physical activities
  • Promoting healthy lifestyles
  • Aspiring through culture and arts
  • Developing skills and employment
  • Embracing cultural differences
  • Building a lasting legacy

Hackney Primary Ambassadors for London 2012
Ninety children from 51 schools across Hackney have been chosen to be Primary Ambassadors for the Olympics as part of an innovative project initiated by The Learning Trust.

Two Year 6 children were recruited from each primary school to promote London 2012 to their fellow pupils and others in the community. This includes updating the noticeboard in their school, delivering an assembly, writing for newsletters and the Get Set Blog, representing Hackney on trips and planning school events.

The ambassadors are also involved in four special 2012 projects; writing a magazine for children, up-cycling unwanted sportswear, shooting an advert and building a website from scratch.

Morgan Costello from St John the Baptist School said this about being an Ambassador: “You learn about the Olympics and also you have to promote the Olympic events and represent your school. It makes me feel proud and I enjoy it as you get to do special things like meeting an Olympic gold medallist as well as learning about the many different types of sports at the Games. So far I have learnt about the Olympic mascots, Wenlock and Mandeville, and I have learnt about the history of the Games and how to speak in public. I have represented my school by writing blogs on Get Set (Olympics website) and going to meetings to take part in lots of activities.”
