Words Unite is a community campaign to get Hackney reading. You might remember seeing our yellow banners and posters around the borough a while ago. The campaign is coordinated by a small team at the Learning Trust, working with partners including schools, libraries, community groups, charities and businesses to encourage as many people as possible to start enjoying reading. You can find out more about our partners here.
The campaign was originally planned to last a year (2007/8) but because it was so successful it was extended for a further two years. 2009/10 is the third year of our activity.
This year, 46 schools and 21 community groups in the borough have received funding to run all kinds of different projects to promote reading. From book clubs to book writing, from music and drama to football, our projects are using anything and everything to show people that reading is fun. You can find out more about our projects on the ‘Reading Projects’ page.
Reading is important for many reasons. It allows you to find out what a shop sells or what’s in your breakfast cereal, how to get to where you want to go, how to access services, and means you can read the texts or emails your friends and family send you. How well you read and how much you enjoy reading can also affect how well you do at school, and how much you might earn.
