In the third year of the Words Unite, we are delighted to be continuing our partnership with Linklaters, who are once again supporting the reading and writing and debating challenges.
Reading and writing challenge 2010.
This year’s theme for the challenge is to write about anyone who lives, has lived or could live in Hackney – either real or imagined. You can write poetry or prose, or submit a drawing inspired by something you’ve read. As many pupils as possible can take part, before the school submits three drawings and three pieces of writing as challenge finalists.
Participating schools will receive a £150 donation for books, as well free resources and an inspiring workshop with a poet, author or illustrator in the spring term.
At the end of the year, a selection of the work will be collated into a book or broadsheet which will be sent to all participating schools. Watch this space for details later in the year!
Debating challenge 2010
Debate is a great way of improving speaking, listening and thinking skills and has a knock-on effect on structured writing. It also helps to develop teamwork, research skills and, above all, confidence. Get involved!
The challenge is aimed at year 5 pupils this year and will provide free training for pupils and teachers, along with free resources from the English Speaking Union. Pupils will practice their debating skills throughout the year before taking part in two competitive Debating Challenge events at Linklaters in the summer term 2010. Themes for the debates will be announced nearer the time. |
