The Childcare Act 2006 gives local authorities a key role in shaping the childcare market. It reinforces the partnership with providers from the private, voluntary, independent and maintained sectors that are necessary to create a diverse childcare market to meet parental needs.
From April 2008 local authorities have a duty to secure sufficient childcare, so far as it is reasonable practical, for parents in their area.
The first Childcare Sufficiency Assessment was carried out in 2007/08. This and a shorter summary were published in March 2008.
In 2008/09, 2009/10 refreshes were conducted and in 2010/11 a full assessment was carried out to provide a more detailed analysis of supply and demand for childcare in Hackney.
