Mentoring Support Programme

The Learning Trust is inviting proposals from CVS groups to deliver a one year Academic and Pastoral Support Programme 2009/10.

The Learning Trust wishes to commission a scheme that seeks to support pupils academically and pastorally in moving from Year 6 to Year 7. We are inviting proposals from CVS groups to recruit young people aged 18 to 25 to be trained as mentors to support pupils in Hackney primary schools.

The volunteers will be CRB checked and have completed a rigorous application process to demonstrate their suitability for the role.

The mentoring will increase primary school pupils’ well-being and confidence as they move into secondary school and raise levels in literacy and numeracy by the end of Year 7. The programme will run from 1st September 2009 until the 31st August 2010.

The focus of the project is intended to be across clusters A & B for pupils who are not currently receiving mentoring from either a Learning Mentor or other funded CVS groups. The provider will identify approximately 30 young people who are positive role models (e.g. those in higher education) and form partnerships with 12 Primary schools to receive referrals from the Year 6 class teacher(s) for pupils who are in need of assistance and support with transition. This will target approximately 60 young people (on the basis that each mentor is assigned 2 mentees).

Ultimately, the mentoring programme seeks to increase attainment at KS2 and KS3 of pupils in English, Maths and Science and improve literacy levels of young people. The objectives of this project are in line with The Learning Trust’s overarching Getting Hackney Reading strategy, which seeks to enthuse and excite Hackney residents about reading and improve literacy levels.

For further information please contact Liz Milford, Procurement Executive

Please note the closing date for applications was Monday 20 July.
