Congratulations to Hilary Cook of Lauriston primary school. On Sunday 15 October Hilary won the 2006 National Teaching Awards, Special Needs Teacher of the year award. She was not the only Hackney success story at this year’s awards. Cheryl Day of Clapton Girls Technology College won the London regional headteacher of the year award and was a finalist at the National Awards.
The Teaching Awards were established by Lord Puttnam in 1998 to help regenerate national pride in the teaching profession. Every year, all 29,000 schools in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are invited to nominate outstanding teachers, headteachers and teaching assistants. Anyone can make a nomination which is then endorsed by a member of senior management. The national award winners are chosen from amongst the thirteen regional award winners.
It speaks volumes for the quality of Hackney’s teaching and schools that we were featured twice at these prestigious awards. More and more the extraordinary work done by colleagues in Hackney Schools is receiving regional and now national recognition. I want to encourage every one working in Hackney Schools to shout about our successes and start submitting nomination to the 2007 Awards.
Once again congratulations to Hilary and Cheryl your achievements and those of colleagues throughout the Borough have made Hackney a place where children and young people can achieve their potential.
