‘Don’t miss out – apply for free school meals and save up to £390 a year’
Around 40% of people in Hackney are eligible for free school emails, but 1 in 5 do not apply. Once your child has a full-time school place you can apply for free school meals if you receive one the following:
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Income-based Employment and Support Allowance
- Child Tax Credit, provided you are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and your income is £16,190 or less (this figure changes each April).
- Working Tax Credit for four weeks after your employment finishes
- The Guarantee element of State Pension Credit
- Support from the National Asylum Support Service (NASS)*
* Asylum seekers need to provide their IND Letter or IND Card, social services letter or their NASS letter in order to qualify for free school meals.
If your child is entitled to free school meals, you could save on average £10 per week or £390 per year. To qualify, your child must have a full-time school place at a maintained school or academy.
How do I apply?
If your child attends a school in Hackney, you must apply to The Learning Trust. It doesn’t matter where you actually live. You will normally only have to make a claim once to be entitled to free school meals*.

* As long as your child attends a school in Hackney we can check your entitlement electronically against information held by the Department for Education. We will do this on a regular basis without you having to renew your application every year or having to provide proof of your entitlement.
