School term and holiday dates for 2011/12
The school term and holiday dates for community schools for the school year 2011/12 are set out below. For 2011/12 the length of the school year has been reduced from the normal minimum of 380 half day sessions to 378 half day sessions to take account of the extra Bank Holiday for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
The dates, which include 5 teachers’ in-service training days, are based on the dates recommended by the Local Government Association.
The term dates for voluntary aided schools and academies are set by their governing bodies. However, these schools have been asked to consider setting the same or similar dates to those agreed for community schools.

One inset day has been set on Monday 5 September 2011. Pupils to be released for a further four days for the purpose of teachers’ in service training (INSET). These days can be taken as inset days or the equivalent twilight sessions. Schools are encouraged to take a twilight session for one of their training days so that the last day of term is on Friday 20 July 2012 instead of Monday 23 July 2012.
