Schools, along with The Learning Trust's Education Attendance Service and hospitals, are able to refer children to the Home Tuition Service.

Core Services
The service teaches children who are unable to attend school for more than 15 working days because of medical needs. These children could include the physically ill or injured or children with mental health problems. Children with potentially long-term sickness or recurrent bouts of chronic sickness leading to extensive periods of absence will be eligible for home tuition.

Referrals can also be made for children who are awaiting operations.

A referral form can be obtained from the service and must be completed giving all relevant information, including details of other professionals and agencies working with the child.

Before the child can be considered for home tuition there must be a medical diagnosis and opinion that the child has an illness that prevents him/her from attending school.

Once it has been agreed that home tuition is to be provided, the service meets with the school, parents, carers and the child to draw up a personal education plan.

Children educated at home will receive a minimum of five hours teaching a week which could be increased where necessary to enable a child to keep up with their studies.

This is particularly important when a student is approaching public examinations.

We work in partnership with the school to ensure continuity of education, with the school retaining the responsibility for providing relevant materials and work for the child.

Returning to school can be an emotional hurdle for the child so we work closely with the school, child, parents, carers and other professionals when planning for a child's return to school.

The Learning Trust's budget supports the Home Tuition Service and enables children to learn at home without schools being charged.
