| The Educational Psychology Service provides a consultation, assessment and advisory service for schools and others including pupils, parents, colleges, The Learning Trust and professional groups concerned with the welfare of children and young people.
Each of the maintained schools and nurseries in Hackney has the services of an educational psychologist allocated to it. Ask your child's school for the name of yours.
What is an educational psychologist?
Educational psychologists are trained teachers who have extra qualifications and experience in children's development, behaviour and learning. They work with children and young people up to the age of 19.
What educational psychologists do
We work mostly in schools. Our job is to:
- help children make progress by looking at the kinds of teaching and learning they need. We work with pupils and parents for the best results.
- advise schools on how to help children with Special Educational Needs achieve more and feel properly included.
- work with small groups of pupils
- run the Parent Advice Service. This gives Hackney parents a chance to meet an educational psychologist to discuss their child's development, behaviour or learning. Ask your child's school for further details.
- support the SENCO, the Head teacher and others by helping to identify things that will improve teaching and learning
- work with staff on school policies and questions that affect all children attending the school, such as behaviour, bullying and emotional literacy
- carry out Statutory Assessments together with other professionals
- provide in-service training (INSET) for teachers on subjects like motivation - at school or elsewhere.
- conduct research in schools
We also provide a service to children not yet in school and to children who do not have a school.
