Home tuition

Hackney Home Tuition Service

The Home Tuition Service provides one-to-one tuition to pupils in their home while they are unable to attend school. The service works in partnership with the pupil, parents/carers and the named person in the school to provide a high quality core education for children with health needs. The Service aims to provide the equivalent of full-time education, where the child’s health needs allow, focusing on English, Maths and Science. This is provided through a balanced combination of one to one tuition, homework and remote learning.

Referring a child to the service

The criteria for provision of home tuition are as follows:

  • the pupil is a resident of the London borough of Hackney;
  • the pupil is of compulsory school age; and
  • the pupil is (due to be) temporarily absent for at least 15 consecutive school days because of medical reasons, including mental ill-health, or their long-term medical condition causes them to be absent for at least 15 days over the course of the current academic year.

The referral must be supported by medical evidence from a specialist medical consultant of the need for home tuition.
