Choosing a primary school is a huge decision and we are pleased that you are thinking about sending your child to a Hackney school.
Our local schools have changed immeasurably over the last decade. More than 98% of our primary schools are currently rated by Ofsted as good or outstanding and 64% pupils in Hackney Primary Schools reach the expected standard in reading, writing and maths at Key Stage 2, which is 11% above the national average.
Changing schools during the school year ('in-year')
If you have moved to the area, or wish to change schools, you can apply outside of the normal school admission times by making an in-year admissions application. If you want your child to go to a different school, discuss any concerns with your current school. Changing schools can be very disruptive for children.
Starting school in September 2019
We’ll offer your child a full-time school place for the start of the school year when they turn five. All children must start reception by the term following their fifth birthday. If your child was born between 1 September 2014 and 31 August 2015, they are due to start reception class next year.
If you are a Hackney resident and your child was born between 1 September 2014 and 31 August 2015, you should apply for a reception school place by 15 January 2019.
You can apply for up to six schools: we recommend that you do this. Don’t just apply for one school.
For more information about the steps you need to take to apply and secure your child’s place at a primary school in Hackney see our full Primary Schools Admissions Guide.
Children with Education, Health and Care Plans
There is a separate transfer process for pupils who have or are likely to get an Education, Health and Care Plan. Do not complete the online form. Please call 020 8820 7326 for further information. You can also find out more about how children with SEND can be supported before and when starting primary school on the Hackney Local Offer website.
