Secondary schools in Hackney
If you are a Hackney resident and your child is in year 6, born between 1 September 2006 and 31 August 2007, you should apply for a secondary school place by 31 October 2017.
Choosing the next step in your child’s education is a huge responsibility for any family, so it’s important that you look closely at each school’s admissions criteria in order to make the right choice for your child.
All Hackney secondary schools are rated good or outstanding by Ofsted and we have some excellent schools for you to choose from. In 2016, Hackney secondary schools ranked first in the country for the average Progress 8 score at key stage 4, meaning pupils in Hackney secondary schools exceed expectations more than anywhere else in the country.
Transferring from year 6 to year 7
You can apply for up to six schools: we recommend that you do this. Don’t just apply for one school.
Hackney academies and secondary schools are very popular. Around 90% of pupils will secure a place at either their first, second or third preference school and around 5% will get their fourth or below preferences. This means that around 5% of applicants will not get a place at any of their preferred schools.
You will find lots of useful information in our secondary school admissions guide.
Most Hackney secondary schools require applicants to sit a cognitive ability test (CAT).
If your child attends a Hackney primary school (in Year 6) they will take the CAT test at their school between Monday 2 October to Friday 20 October 2017.
If your child attends a school outside Hackney they will be invited to sit the CAT test at a Hackney secondary school on Saturday 26 November or Saturday 2 December 2017. It is your responsibility to ensure your child is available to sit the test on these dates. There are no alternative test dates and if your child does not sit the banding test your application will be disadvantaged.
Children with Education, Health and Care Plans
There is a separate transfer process for Year 6 pupils who have a statement of Special Educational Needs or an Education, Health and Care Plan. Do not complete the online form. A separate application form will be sent to you to list the schools you prefer for your child.
If you have not received this form, please call 020 8820 7326.
