Choosing the next step in your child’s education is a huge responsibility for any family, so it’s important that you look closely at each school’s admissions criteria in order to make the right choice for your child.
All Hackney secondary schools are rated good or outstanding by Ofsted and we have some excellent schools for you to choose from. In 2016, Hackney secondary schools ranked first in the country for the average Progress 8 score at key stage 4, meaning pupils in Hackney secondary schools exceed expectations more than anywhere else in the country.
Changing schools during the school year ('in-year')
If you have moved to the area, or wish to change schools, you can apply outside of the normal school admission times by making an in-year admissions application. If you want your child to go to a different school, discuss any concerns with your current school. Changing schools can be very disruptive for children.
Transferring from year 6 to year 7 in September 2020
Applications will open on 2 September 2019. Visit this webpage for more information in September.
You can plan visits to Hackney Secondary schools for September and October by viewing the Open Events for 2019. These events are intended for families with children who will transfer from primary to secondary school in September 2020.
Transferring from year 6 to year 7 in September 2019
If you are a Hackney resident and your child is in year 6, born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008, you should apply for a secondary school place by 31 October 2018.
You can apply for up to six schools: we recommend that you do this. Don’t just apply for one school.
Hackney academies and secondary schools are very popular. Around 90% of pupils will secure a place at either their first, second or third preference school and around 5% will get their fourth or below preferences. This means that around 5% of applicants will not get a place at any of their preferred schools.
For more information about the steps you need to take to apply and secure your child’s place at a secondary school in Hackney see our full Secondary Schools Admissions Guide.
Most Hackney secondary schools require applicants to sit a cognitive ability test (CAT).
If your child attends a Hackney primary school (in Year 6) they will take the CAT test at their school between Monday 1 October and Friday 19 October 2018.
If your child attends a school outside Hackney they will be invited to sit the CAT test at a Hackney secondary school on Saturday 24 November or Saturday 1 December 2018. It is your responsibility to ensure your child is available to sit the test on these dates. There are no alternative test dates and if your child does not sit the banding test your application will be disadvantaged.
Children with Education, Health and Care Plans
There is a separate transfer process for Year 6 pupils who have a statement of Special Educational Needs or an Education, Health and Care Plan. Do not complete the online form. A separate application form will be sent to you to list the schools you prefer for your child.
If you have not received this form, please call 020 8820 7326.
